marker
The Hochelaga marker at McGill University in Montreal commemorates the site of the fortified indigenous town of Hochelaga, visited by Jacques Cartier in 1535. The town contained about fifty large houses housing multiple families who lived by cultivation and fishing. It was abandoned before 1600. The marker is located near 853 Rue Sherbrooke West on the McGill campus and highlights the early indigenous history of the Montreal area.
