Settlers (Original Patentees) of the District of Columbia Memorial near the Ellipse in Washington, D.C. by Carl Mose

The Settlers (Original Patentees) of the District of Columbia Memorial is a granite monument near the Ellipse in Washington, D.C., created by Carl Mose and dedicated in 1935. It commemorates the original eighteen land patentees whose grants included the site of the federal city before 1700. Each side of the monument features relief carvings symbolizing early agricultural activities, and the base lists the names of these early landowners. Donated by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the memorial serves as a historical teaching tool.
